How to Buy Low Rise Jeans for Your Body Type

When low rise jeans emerged on the fashion runways in the mid ‘90s, a new style staple was born.

But, how to you wear these ultra low rise pants without revealing three inches of butt crack?

The answer lies in the fit of the jeans and the laws of proportion. You must pick low rise pants that favor the natural curves of the body.  Here’s how:

First, let’s go back in time for some low rise jean fashion history:

Hip-huggers were the first low rise jeans. These rock ‘n’ roll influenced low rise pants were popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s with “make love not war” hippies and disco-loving dancing fiends.

In the ‘90s Alexander McQueen created low rise “Bumsters” for his models and Tom Ford popularized the low rise look for his famous hip-hugging velvet suit.

But no group of fashion lovers has been more low-rise jeans crazy more than celebrity- loving teens and young adults. Influenced by Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and J Lo’s low rise jean revolution, these hip-hugging jean aficionados purchase  low rise jeans to mimic the style of their favorite music stars and runway idols.

Low Rise Jeans Tip # 1- Dress for your denim body type.

Curvy women must avoid super-low-cut styles or ultra low rise jeans that sit mid-hip. Choose low riders with stretch that will hug your curves and smooth without adding bulk.

Short women should wear low rise jeans to give the illusion of a longer torso. Pear-shaped women with lady lumps around their tummy or a large bottom need low rise pants with a wide waistband.

For women with a boyish figure or a flat bottom, choose low-rise jeans with a straight leg that hugs your bottom. Include denim jeans with a low-slung yoke and back-pocket detailing.

Low Rise Jeans Tip # 2- Check for hip-huggers that fall too far below the belly button.

The rise or crotch length on a standard pair of low rise denim is somewhere between 3 to 7 inches.  The rise should fit comfortably without binding.

To select the perfect rise length (from waistband to crotch), the low rise jeans should fall halfway between the pelvic bone and the navel or about 3 to 4 inches below the navel.

Don’t let your rise hang too low; it will make legs appear shorter. In fact, your low rise jeans should rest right above your buttocks, but fall right below your waistline.

Low Rise Jeans Tip # 3- Avoid any muffin top and butt crack sightings.

When you sit or squat you don’t want to reveal intimate parts of your backside.  For women with a fleshy tummy, buy a pair of low cut jeans that are one size larger than your normal size.

Choose a pair of jeans with a minimum of 3 percent spandex. This stretchy material will ensure that when you move, the jeans won’t dig into your flesh at the waist. With spandex-infused jeans your backside will always remain covered.

Low Rise Jeans Tip # 4- Watch the slope of your jeans.

The slope is the relationship between the back rise and front rise of your low cut jeans. The right slope can give you a flattering low rise in the front and cover any thongs in the back. Aim for a pair of low rise designer jeans that skims at 2 to 3 inches below your belly button to balance the rise perfectly.

To add low rise jeans to your wardrobe, use this denim primer before you go shopping. You can find and wear the best pair of low-rise designer jeans and remove any denim problems in the rear.
